The “Rules” That Hold You Back

Every now and then, it’s worth asking yourself a tough question:

What if the biggest thing holding you back isn’t your circumstances—but your thinking?

You see, most of us live by a set of invisible “rules.”

We didn’t write them, but we follow them anyway.

Rules about what’s possible, what’s realistic, what people like us can or can’t do.

These rules start innocently enough.

Maybe someone once said, “You’re not a numbers person.” Or “That’s too risky.” Or “That’s just how things are.”

And because we heard it often enough—or saw others live by it—we started to believe it too.

Business Teamwork, Success And Strategy Concept

Psychologists call this the Illusory Truth Effect—the more you hear something, the more it starts to feel true.

So, without even realising it, these ideas stop being opinions and start feeling like laws of nature.

You stop questioning them. You stop pushing against them. You start living within their limits.

But the Wright Brothers didn’t.

When everyone said, “Humans will never fly,” they quietly proved otherwise.

They didn’t have fancy degrees or government grants.

They had curiosity, persistence, and the audacity to ask, “What if that rule isn’t true?”

Just nine weeks after the New York Times confidently declared flight impossible, they took flight for 12 seconds in their man-made flying machine in an open field in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.

And in that moment, every so-called “rule” about human limitation crumbled.

Here’s the truth: most of the rules you think are holding you back—aren’t rules at all.

They’re just suggestions someone repeated often enough for you to believe them.

  • “You have to work harder to get ahead.” (Maybe you just need to work smarter.)
  • “You can’t succeed without money.” (Plenty of people started with nothing but a plan.)
  • “The market’s too tough right now.” (That’s when opportunities hide in plain sight.)
  • “You’re too old / too young / too busy.” (That’s just fear, dressed up as logic.)

Every great breakthrough - personal, financial, or otherwise - comes from questioning the so-called rules everyone else accepts.

So this week, pause and ask yourself:

Which “rules” am I following that are really just suggestions? What beliefs am I clinging to that no longer serve me?

Because sometimes, all it takes to change your trajectory is to realise that the limitations you see aren’t walls—they’re chalk lines you can step over.

And just like the Wright Brothers, that tiny shift in thinking might be exactly what helps you take flight.
