There’s a reason why tradespeople spend years as apprentices learning their craft – because they are complex and require specialist skills.
In my line of work, I witness an inordinate amount of people trying to cut corners and save money.
The problem is that DIY still costs money and, more often than not, more money on fixing your amateur mistakes.
DIY robs you of your most precious asset – time.
Stick with being an expert in your chosen field, charge well for your time, and spend some of that money on paying a tradesman to deliver quality work in the shortest timeframe possible.
If I can’t convince you, perhaps the statistics will.
The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare data shows that around 3,300 Australians are hospitalised each year with injuries from DIY jobs gone bad – and most these are caused by power tools.
Add to that the financial implications of health care and time away from work and you will suddenly be well behind where you could have been if you had of paid an expert in the first place.
The next time you are perusing the countless tools available in Bunnings and dreaming of the money you will save if you DIY on the weekend, go back to work and call a professional.
