Has the housing market reached the bottom of the cycle?

According to RP Data, the Australian housing market peaked during October 2010 and since that time dwelling values have fallen by 5.9% (7.4% to the May 2012 trough) across the combined capital cities index based on the RP Data-Rismark Home Value Index to the end of July.

This interesting article with good graphs shows how various overseas property markets have performed since there peaks.

Over the same twenty month ‘post peak’ time frame, the US housing market had recorded a 10.2% fall, UK prices were down 22.5% and New Zealand had seen a 9.1% fall.

As you can see both the New Zealnd and United Kingdom markets plateaued after falling 18 -20 months, which is about where we are in Australia.

The good news is our economic fundamentals are better her in Australia than overseas, so maybe our markets are turning.

The Glittering Skyscrapers of China’s More Anonymous Cities

At the rate that China is building skyscrapers—that’s one completed every five days to be exact—it’s no wonder that some out-of-the-way Chinese locales are home to tall buildings.

That said, there are some spectacular examples of high-rise architecture, some that compete for tallest in the world, in the cities outside of Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Beijing. The Canton Tower (below),

in the southern city of Guangzhou, is the tallest structure in China and was completed to great fanfare before the 2010 Asian Games.

The twisting, LED-lit structure briefly held the title of world’s tallest freestanding building, but was surpassed this year by Japan’s under-construction Tokyo Sky Tree, which uses a remarkably similar mesh construction.

Luckily China has plenty more where this came from.
