What are you prepared to give up to stand out from the crowd?
Successful people have many habits that help them succeed but they also abide by a number of self-induced rules to ensure they stay at the top of their game.
So, if you want to be one of the best, you need to discover which habits help you grow and which ones do little but hold you back.
1. They learn first and do later
Successful people understand the value of learning.
They also strive to continue learning new skills and expanding on what they already know.
They recognise that they must learn throughout their lives because expansion of their knowledge and skills is essential on their path to success.
If they stop learning then there will be no more growth, no more life lessons, and there will be no more success.
2. They work outside their comfort zone
Too many people opt to work within the safety and security of their comfort zone, which generally produces average results.
Successful people understand that to reach their goals they must work outside their comfort zone – even if it can sometimes feel uncomfortable to do so.
They recognise that in order to grow, they need to try new things and expand their horizons.
Motivational speaker, Les Brown, said it best with, “If you put yourself in a position where you have to stretch outside your comfort zone, then you are forced to expand your consciousness.”
3. They don’t lie to themselves
Of course, it’s completely counter-productive to lie to yourself but unfortunately it’s also one of the easiest things to do.
Successful people accept the problems that they have and don’t make excuses for them or lie to themselves.
They understand that they will encounter problems, both internally and externally, throughout their journey but instead of running away from them they deal with them head-on instead.
Steve Maraboli once said, “Stop lying to yourself. When we deny our own truth, we deny our own potential.”
4. They’re not afraid to ask for advice
Let’s face it, asking for advice is not always easy.
The difference between successful and unsuccessful people is that they’re not afraid to ask advice if they’re unsure about something.
They recognise that they don’t have all the answers and by asking for advice from someone who may be in an expert in a certain field they’ll be greatly expanding their knowledge as well as potentially increasing their network of peers.
5. They concentrate on the big picture
When life gives us seemingly endless opportunities, it’s can be easy to get lost in the small details.
The small details can be easy for us to become focused on, thus causing us to miss out on the overall vision, also known as the “big picture”.
Successful people understand that focusing too much on the small stuff limits their ability to see how everything fits together.
Much of our lives hinge upon the connections that we make with others and with ourselves so if we get lost in the small detail, it’s like having missing pieces to a puzzle.
6. They’re leaders and not followers
You’ve probably heard the phrase “lead, follow or get out of the way” because there are two types of people in this world – leaders and followers.
It goes without saying that the ones who are successful are the people who are leading the pack.
Successful people are not that way because they got there by chance or they followed somebody else to the finish line.
They paved their own path in life to get where they needed to be.
7. They don’t dwell on the past
Everyone makes mistakes in life.
But successful people accept this, learn from them, and then move on.
They understand that the past is something that we can’t change and nor should we want to change it.
Without the mistakes of the past, successful people would not have learned the lessons that they needed to learn.
One of the key traits of successful people is their ability to dust themselves off from mistakes or temporary failures and to continue working towards their end goal.
So as you can see, successful people don’t get that way because of blind luck.
They become experts in their field, surround themselves with people who can help them along the way, and give up bad habits that will limit their chances of success.
So by adopting success or rich habits and ditching poor ones, everyone can set themselves up to lead a more successful life – and a happier one, too.
